Headboard Size Guide: How to Choose the Right Width & Height for Your Bed
By Sidra X Designs · Montréal · · 6 min read

A headboard is the single largest visual element in a bedroom, so getting its size right matters more than almost any other choice — including fabric. Too narrow and the bed looks unfinished; too short and it disappears behind your pillows; too tall and it can crowd a standard 8-foot ceiling. This guide walks through exactly how to size a custom upholstered headboard for a Twin, Double, Queen or King bed, using the same rules of thumb we use when we build headboards to order in our Montréal studio.
Step 1: Headboard width by bed size
Start with your mattress, not your frame. A headboard should be at least as wide as the mattress, and ideally a little wider so the edges frame the bedding rather than stopping flush with it. For a headboard that attaches to a bed frame, we generally recommend adding about 2–4 inches to the mattress width. For a wall-mounted statement headboard, you can go much wider — some clients run the upholstery behind the nightstands for a hotel-style look.
| Bed size | Mattress (W × L) | Headboard width (on frame) | Statement / wall-mounted |
|---|---|---|---|
| Twin | 39" × 75" | 41"–43" | 45"–60" |
| Double (Full) | 54" × 75" | 56"–58" | 60"–80" |
| Queen | 60" × 80" | 62"–64" | 66"–100"+ |
| King | 76" × 80" | 78"–80" | 82"–120"+ |
| California King | 72" × 84" | 74"–76" | 78"–110"+ |
Measure your actual mattress before ordering — mattress brands vary by an inch or two, and a thick mattress topper can add width as well as height.
Step 2: Headboard height — the number most people get wrong
Height is where a headboard either makes a statement or quietly disappears. The key measurement is the visible height above the mattress, because that is what you actually see once the bed is made.
Low-profile (visible 10–20" above the mattress)
Clean and modern, and ideal under a window or a sloped ceiling. Low headboards suit platform-style beds — our Haven bed is a good example — but they are less comfortable for reading in bed because there is little to lean against.
Standard (visible 20–30" above the mattress)
The most versatile range. With a typical mattress top sitting around 22–26" from the floor, this works out to an overall headboard height of roughly 48–56" from the floor. It gives full back support for sitting up and works with almost any ceiling height.
Tall statement (overall 60"–72"+ from the floor)
Tall, channel-tufted or panelled headboards turn the bed wall into a feature wall. As a general guide, leave at least 18–24" between the top of the headboard and an 8-foot ceiling so the room doesn't feel compressed. With 9-foot ceilings or higher, a floor-to-ceiling headboard becomes a real option — this is one of the most common custom requests we build.

Step 3: Check the headboard against your room
- Windows and outlets: mark the window sill height and any outlets or switches on the bed wall. A headboard can be notched or shaped, but it is easier to plan for it before production.
- Nightstands and lamps:a headboard that is 4–6" taller than your table lamps keeps the composition balanced. If you go extra-wide, measure the space for nightstands on each side first.
- Wall sconces: plan sconce placement after you know the headboard height — they usually sit just above or beside the top edge.
- Delivery path: very wide or tall headboards need to fit through doors, stairwells and elevators. Large pieces can be built in sections if needed.
Step 4: Match the size to the style
The design of the headboard changes how big it feels. Vertical channels — like our Volta bed — draw the eye upward and make a room feel taller, so they suit tall headboards. Wide horizontal panels feel grounded and calm, which suits low and standard heights. Tufted or wingback designs read as heavier and usually need a little more width to look proportional.
Fabric also plays a role. Velvet catches the light and highlights the shape, bouclé softens the outline, and linen keeps a large headboard feeling relaxed. You can compare textures in our fabric library and order free swatches before you commit.
How to measure for a custom headboard
- Measure mattress width and length, then measure the height from the floor to the top of the mattress (with topper).
- Measure the full width of the bed wall and the ceiling height.
- Note the position and height of windows, outlets, switches and any existing sconces.
- Decide whether the headboard will mount to your existing frame or the wall — or whether you want a full custom bed.
- Take a straight-on photo of the wall; it helps us suggest proportions during your consultation.

Frequently Asked Questions
How wide should a headboard be for a queen bed?
A queen mattress is 60 inches wide, so a headboard mounted to the frame should be about 62–64 inches wide. Wall-mounted statement headboards can be much wider, often 66 to 100 inches or more.
How wide should a headboard be for a king bed?
A standard king mattress is 76 inches wide, so aim for a headboard of about 78–80 inches. For an extra-wide statement look that runs behind the nightstands, 82 to 120 inches or more is common.
What is a standard headboard height?
Most headboards sit 48 to 56 inches from the floor, which shows about 20 to 30 inches above a typical mattress. Low-profile headboards are shorter, while tall statement headboards run 60 to 72 inches or higher.
Should a headboard be wider than the bed?
Yes — ideally a headboard is slightly wider than the mattress, about 2 to 4 inches for a frame-mounted headboard, so it frames the bedding instead of stopping flush with it.
How tall can a headboard be with an 8-foot ceiling?
With an 8-foot (96-inch) ceiling, leave roughly 18 to 24 inches above the headboard, which puts a comfortable maximum around 72 to 78 inches from the floor. Higher ceilings allow floor-to-ceiling designs.
Can Sidra X Designs make a headboard in a custom size?
Yes. Every headboard is made to order in our Montréal studio in your choice of size, fabric and design, either as a headboard only or a complete custom bed. Standard production is about 6–8 weeks, with delivery across Canada and the US.
